The Wee Archive – The Wee Writing Lassie and Ailish Sinclair present “Bubbles Galore” – Question 10: Has she a favourite place in the world?

She loves the pool in the woods by the castle. The descriptions of this pool in my books (it’s there in the 1stcentury, 16th century and modern day) are all inspired by the small loch that I live beside.

Excerpt: The pool looks amazing! Thick mist is swirling across the surface, so white, like heaven come to earth. Wow. I jump out onto the rock in the water and sit down on it and am immediately absorbed into the atmosphere of the place. The mist touches me and I breathe it in, becoming one with it, the cold of it, the white of it, the beauty of it. Warm clothes can’t keep it out; I’m inhaling it all right into my body.

Bubbles: Dancing Through History

It’s going to be the most boring year of her life. That’s what Bubbles has decided. This, her second year at the castle school, will involve no naked dancing, or television appearances. No fires in stone circles. No meltdowns. No hospital stays. You know, not like last year.

As she walks up the tree-lined drive towards the castle, she is immediately surrounded by TV reporters. Next she encounters the enigmatic and charming new boy, American student Aiden, and finds herself in an instalove situation. Being cast as the lead in a historical documentary is altogether too exciting and fun, as are the night-time visits to caves and underground chambers.

As Bubbles navigates her difficult home life, the complexities of her mental health and various intense experiences at the castle, she struggles to maintain equilibrium.

Will she be able to find balance amidst the chaos, or will her carefully laid ‘boring’ plan unravel completely?

The Wee Writing Lassie and Ailish Sinclair present “Meet Ariel” – Question 7: If push came to shove, what would they say is their greatest flaw

This is something else that changes through the book. At one point Ariel will wonder if she’s been irrevocably damaged by her upbringing and left unable to communicate properly. However, nearer the start of the story, she believes that she has no choreographic ability and sees this as a major flaw and problem.

Excerpt from Ariel: Dancing on TV

“I’m sensing drama here,” says Justin as he arrives beside us, followed closely by Nigel and the notebook, and a woman with a large portable camera.

“I’ve never done choreography before,” I tell the producer. “I’ve only just started learning pas de deux.”

“It’s all a journey, darling,” he says, then doing a double take. He’s seen my hand, but he’s not horrified; if anything, he’s excited. “You’re Ariel. Oh yes, this is good. Stick to her,” he orders the camera woman. “Nigel! Write this down: oh the pain of youth, the sighing sadness… no, cut that. Start again: a young woman, beautiful, talented, just starting out in her dancing life, is suddenly the victim of a crime so terrible, so heinous, that it cannot be detailed for legal reasons.”

It would be what he calls his ‘messed-up head,’ his sometimes disordered thinking and the bad choices he makes. He really wants to fix that here at the beginning of the book.

Excerpt: I lie down on the stone and stare up at the sky. I do this for a long time. The puffy clouds change as I look at them; they elongate and stretch out into something smoother and harder looking. All golden on top but dark and red down below. Like me. Golden on the outside, so people say anyway, but dark and messed-up inside. And I need to change, like the clouds have just done. I need to take back what should never have been given away.

Alexander gets up to a lot of mischief throughout the series, so it’s a little hard to choose. He does something dramatic and shocking at his uncle’s wedding. It involves duct tape.

Excerpt: So, what to do? What would teach him a lesson? I look round the small room. A stone angel gazes back from the wall, its hand pointing downwards. See, I know this is like an ancient signpost to the underground tunnels but here, today, the angel seems to be pointing to the old drawer unit. I pull a few drawers open and find a roll of heavy-duty silver sticky tape and a scissors.

The Wee Writing Lassie and Ailish Sinclair present “Will the real Alexander please stand up?” – Question 12: Would Alexander consider himself to have an enemy?

He considers his sister Simone to be an enemy. For a long time, he thought was his mother. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Alexander for his messed-up back story. I am very, very, very sorry.

Excerpt: Simone… what’s the word? Saunters? Staggers? She would think it was something sophisticated like ‘sashays,’ I bet. But it’s really more like: slithers. She slithers up to us in her crumpled red dress, hair blonde again, her minder, Ross, nowhere to be seen.

She holds up her champagne glass as if in toast. “A Manteith is back on the throne of the castle,” she says. “All is as it should be.”

“Isn’t it about time you left?” I ask, staring her down. “I can’t believe you were actually invited.”

She shakes her head. “I’m here with Ross. His guest. But it’s a bit odd, though, isn’t it?”

“Yeah,” I agree. “It is. So leave.”

I’m not too sure about this. Much of what Alexander learned when he was young was twisted and strange. Bubbles does speak wise words to him sometimes, and he remembers them.

Excerpt: I could be about to find out everything I ever wanted to know. Everything that was kept from me. I could be about to find out way more than I want to know, way more than is comfortable. I mean, they didn’t tell me stuff for a reason, right? I remember Bubbles saying something like that once, after we’d been down there in the deeper parts of the dungeon.

Much as he wouldn’t want to admit it, Alexander enjoys being challenged in class, so does appreciate his father’s exacting teaching.

Excerpt: They really made furniture to last back in the olden times. Dragging this chair up these steps is possibly the hardest workout of my life. And I’ve been put through my paces by the great Aleksandr Zolotov. Not for a while, though. And it shows. I’m sweating, really sweating; I stop to wipe my eyes with my sleeve.
