Wee Archive: Question 15: If Alexander could describe himself with one word, what would it be?

Alexander does rather like the word ‘melt’ and uses it to describe anyone, including himself, who he considers to be being cowardly.

Excerpt: I know I’m being a coward, a monumentally massive melt in fact, by doing it this way, hiding away instead of facing everyone. But, it’s all I can do. I couldn’t make my legs carry me out of this room just now even if I wanted to, even if my ankle was fine.

It would be what he calls his ‘messed-up head,’ his sometimes disordered thinking and the bad choices he makes. He really wants to fix that here at the beginning of the book.

Excerpt: I lie down on the stone and stare up at the sky. I do this for a long time. The puffy clouds change as I look at them; they elongate and stretch out into something smoother and harder looking. All golden on top but dark and red down below. Like me. Golden on the outside, so people say anyway, but dark and messed-up inside. And I need to change, like the clouds have just done. I need to take back what should never have been given away.

Alexander gets up to a lot of mischief throughout the series, so it’s a little hard to choose. He does something dramatic and shocking at his uncle’s wedding. It involves duct tape.

Excerpt: So, what to do? What would teach him a lesson? I look round the small room. A stone angel gazes back from the wall, its hand pointing downwards. See, I know this is like an ancient signpost to the underground tunnels but here, today, the angel seems to be pointing to the old drawer unit. I pull a few drawers open and find a roll of heavy-duty silver sticky tape and a scissors.

He considers his sister Simone to be an enemy. For a long time, he thought was his mother. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Alexander for his messed-up back story. I am very, very, very sorry.

Excerpt: Simone… what’s the word? Saunters? Staggers? She would think it was something sophisticated like ‘sashays,’ I bet. But it’s really more like: slithers. She slithers up to us in her crumpled red dress, hair blonde again, her minder, Ross, nowhere to be seen.

She holds up her champagne glass as if in toast. “A Manteith is back on the throne of the castle,” she says. “All is as it should be.”

“Isn’t it about time you left?” I ask, staring her down. “I can’t believe you were actually invited.”

She shakes her head. “I’m here with Ross. His guest. But it’s a bit odd, though, isn’t it?”

“Yeah,” I agree. “It is. So leave.”

Yes, there is romance on the horizon for Alexander, but it will take him a long time to sort out his confused feelings and fears.

Excerpt: I would like to stay thinking about her. About her smile, and how it feels when she looks at me. How I feel when she hugs me, and the things she said when I first saw her at Justin’s wedding. She said I was sexy, like she really believed it. I would like to go back there, to that moment. Maybe make some different choices. Have a different sort of evening.

The Wee Writing Lassie and Ailish Sinclair present “Bubbles Galore” – Question 5: Favourite Food?

Unlike Ariel, Bubbles doesn’t have the healthiest relationship with food. She believes she needs to be thinner than she is, and favours salads for meals. When she’s feeling rebellious, she tends towards chocolate and sugar, as she will do after this scene:

I choose one of his own words as an answer to all these commands. I say it repeatedly, mindlessly, with no expression in my voice.

No cake: “Absolutely.”

No boys: “Absolutely.”

Last year, our morning class teacher Guy (Australian) told us that British people are incapable of saying the word ‘absolutely’ without sounding sarcastic. It’s true. Try it. Or imagine it being said in a British accent. So I’m not really lying. I’m just being sarcastic.

It’s going to be the most boring year of her life. That’s what Bubbles has decided. This, her second year at the castle school, will involve no naked dancing, or television appearances. No fires in stone circles. No meltdowns. No hospital stays. You know, not like last year.

Next she encounters the enigmatic and charming new boy, American student Aiden, and finds herself in an instalove situation. Being cast as the lead in a historical documentary is altogether too exciting and fun, as are the night-time visits to caves and underground chambers.

Near the beginning of the story, Bubbles would say Aiden is her favourite person, the new student at the school. As to who it really is, the reader will see that expressed in various ways throughout the story, and they may work it out before Bubbles herself.

Excerpt: Okay. I like this. I know that this is so that she and I can talk in private. Like the besties we are. But the moment we are out of earshot of the great hall and into the kitchen passageway, she starts giving me a hard time.

“Don’t you go fancying him,” she says.

“I don’t fancy him.”

“You do.”

I shrug. It’s probably not a good idea to state that this goes beyond fancying and that I’ve actually fallen in love with Aiden. Love at first sight. Instalove.
