The Wee Writing Lassie’s 300 Books in a Year – Book 149

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Goodreads Blurb: A murder…A tragic accident…Or just parents behaving badly? What’s indisputable is that someone is dead.

Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny, biting, and passionate; she remembers everything and forgives no one. Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare but she is paying a price for the illusion of perfection. New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for a nanny. She comes with a mysterious past and a sadness beyond her years. These three women are at different crossroads, but they will all wind up in the same shocking place.

Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the little lies that can turn lethal.

Goodreads Review: This is one of my favourite books – I first read it because of the tv series but I have to say, it’s actually a lot better than that. Not that the series was bad, it just never quite captured the magic of the book.

Snape: A Definite Reading by Lorrie Kim

Goodreads Blurb: From the Introduction: “The Harry Potter series may be named after the Boy Who Lived, but if you want to know the story, keep your eyes fixed on Snape. This hook-nosed, greasy-haired, grumpy character is one of J.K. Rowling’s enduring gifts to English literature. He’s the archetypal ill-tempered teacher: acerbic, yet horribly, deliciously funny. Every time he opens his mouth, he delivers. When he’s in a scene, you can’t take your eyes off him. Snape is always the story.”

In this examination of J.K. Rowling’s most enigmatic character, Lorrie Kim shows us how to sort through the illusions and lies to the man who dared to spy on Voldemort, and without whom Harry’s story would have turned out very differently. In his final moments, he asks Harry (and the reader) to “look at me.” This book does just that.

Room by Emma Donoghue

Goodreads Blurb: To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it’s where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma, it is the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through determination, ingenuity, and fierce motherly love, Ma has created a life for Jack. But she knows it’s not enough … not for her or for him. She devises a bold escape plan, one that relies on her young son’s bravery and a lot of luck. What she does not realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to actually work.

No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy

Goodreads Blurb: The setting is the Texas-Mexico border. The time is our own, when rustlers have given way to drug-runners and small towns have become free-fire zones. A good old boy named Llewellyn Moss finds a pickup truck surrounded by dead men. A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. When Moss takes the money, he sets off a chain reaction that not even the law can contain. Encompassing themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning’s headlines, No Country for Old Men is a triumph.

Goodreads Review: This is a very deep thinking book – often in ways you wouldn’t think a book about robbers and hitmen would go, but there you have it. And since that is one of my favourite kinds of book, I give this five out of five ⭐️

Le Morte d’Arthur: King Arthur and the Legends of the Round Table by Thomas Malory

Goodreads Blurb: Presents the story of King Arthur, his knights of the Round Table, the sword Excalibur, and his tragic death.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: This book tries its hardest to make you feel sorry for Lancelot at the end. As to whether it was successful in that, I will simply say this. You can call him noble , or the greatest of all knights all you like – but I will still be happy when he dies.

Serenity Found: More Unauthorised Essays on Joss Whedon’s Firefly Universe by Jane Espenson (Editor & Contributor)

Goodreads Blurb: A lot has happened since Finding Serenity. We learned River’s secret; Mal took on the Alliance. Our favorite crew became Big Damn Heroes. And the Browncoats proved that hard work, passion and a little fan coordination can do the impossible. Serenity Found takes the contents of Finding Serenity even further, exploring not just the show but the events of the film as well, to create an anthology that’s even more thought-provoking, fascinating and far-thinking than its predecessor.

Finding Serenity: Anti-Heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon’s Firefly by Jane Espenson (Editor)

Goodreads Blurb: Firefly’s early demise left fans with a deep sense of loss and plenty of unanswered questions. From what was wrong with the pilot to what was right with the Reavers, from the use of Chinese to how correspondence between Joss and network executives might have gone, from a philosopher’s perspective on “Objects in Space” to a sex therapist’s analysis of Inara, Finding Serenity is filled with writing as exciting, funny and enthralling as the show itself.

The Wicked Day by Mary Stewart

Goodreads Blurb: Now, the spellbinding, final chapter of King Arthur’s reign, where Mordred, sired by incest and reared in secrecy, ingratiates himself at court, and sets in motion the Fates and the end of Arthur.
