The Wee Writing Lassie’s 300 Books in a Year – Book 57

White Nights by Ann Cleeves

Goodreads Blurb: It’s midsummer in the Shetland Islands, the time of the white nights, when birds sing at midnight and the sun never sets. Artist Bella Sinclair throws an elaborate party to launch an exhibition of her work at The Herring House, a gallery on the beach.

The party ends in farce when one the guests, a mysterious Englishman, bursts into tears and claims not to know who he is or where he’s come from. The following day the Englishman is found hanging from a rafter, and Detective Jimmy Perez is convinced that the man has been murdered. He is reinforced in this belief when Roddy, Bella’s musician nephew, is murdered, too.

But the detective’s relationship with Fran Hunter may have clouded his judgment, for this is a crazy time of the year when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems.

Goodreads Review: Jimmy Perez strikes again 😁 I think what I like best about this book – beside the mystery which was full of all the twists and turns you’d expect from a good detective novel – was the atmosphere. Everything felt so very real and genuine.

Floriography by Endrina

Goodreads Blurb: This is an Advent Calendar working as an epilogue for “the secret language of plant” series. (A collection of short stories)

(Goodreads Page)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: I loved this story – it was the perfect end to a truly magical series. Was I too corny just there? Ah well, if this series teaches us anything, it is that it’s not the high sweeping tales of glory that makes something worth reading but the smaller stories hidden behind those epic quests. The jokes, the puns shared between friends. Or in other words, sometimes we all need a bit of corniness in our lives.

Bubbles: Dancing Through History at Ailish Sinclair

Goodreads Blurb: It’s going to be the most boring year of her life. That’s what Bubbles has decided. This, her second year at the castle school, will involve no naked dancing, or television appearances. No fires in stone circles. No meltdowns. No hospital stays. You know, not like last year.

(Goodreads Page)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: I think this may be my favourite of all of Sinclair’s books – it’s certainly the one with my favourite POV character. There’s something so raw about Bubbles’ struggles with her mental health and personal trauma, that gets you right in old blood pumper.

You also just can’t help but respect a girl who wants nothing more than to have a boring year – despite attending school in a castle with a dungeon.

The Meaning of Geranium by Endrina

Goodreads Blurb: With adulthood comes the realization that parents can’t fix all. That there are dangers that are too big. This is the story of a war and the people who didn’t want to fight in it but did anyway.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: I’d never thought I’d say this but Percy Weasley is now my favourite character 😁 A most excellent story, I throughly recommend it to anyone, not just Harry Potter fans ❤️

The Meaning of Dandelions by Edrina

Goodreads Blurb: The stupid hat was stupid and refused to help Harry. The whole school and its division in houses was stupid too, and the teachers. Harry was in Hogwarts, but he didn’t want to be. He wanted to go back home.

The Meaning of Mistletoe by Endrina

(Book cover by batid0)

Goodreads Blurb: “Just… tell me. Tell me what is going on, Snape.”

What was going on was that Severus Snape had no trouble tracking down one Petunia Evans, now Dursley, to a little town in Surrey where he saw how exactly she was treating her nephew. Which somehow led to last night and Severus knocking on Lupin’s door with a toddler half-asleep in his arms.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: A very sweet and lovely story, with a very depressing ending. Thank goodness it’s got a sequel 😁

Ghosts: The Button House Archives By Matthew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond

Goodreads Blurb: The comic companion to the BBC sitcom GHOSTS.

Everybody leaves a trace. The ghosts of Button House may have been dead a long time – some of them a very long time – but they have all left their mark on the world (even if, in Robin’s case, that mark is just a handprint on the wall of a cave).
