Goodreads Review: This was awesome, although Anakin does not come off well in it – who knew Darth Vader could be such a selfish jerk.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Goodreads Blurb: Mary Lennox, a spoiled, ill-tempered, and unhealthy child, comes to live with her reclusive uncle in Misselthwaite Manor on England’s Yorkshire moors after the death of her parents. There she meets a hearty housekeeper and her spirited brother, a dour gardener, a cheerful robin, and her wilful, hysterical, and sickly cousin, Master Colin, whose wails she hears echoing through the house at night.

Goodreads Review: There is a kind of magic that people don’t often associate with the word nowadays. Because it is not flashy, it does not involve men with long beards saying strange words in half-forgotten languages. It is a quiet, humble kind of magic. The kind that lets invalids walk and contrary girls smile You might call this magic common-sense … but I call it the Secret Garden.

Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne

Goodreads Blurb: One of the most celebrated tales of all time, Around the World in 80 Days is part high-octane thriller, part fascinating fantasy travelogue. Pragmatic gambler Phileas Fogg has made a gentlemanly wager to the members of his exclusive club: that he can circle the world in just 80 days, right down to the minute.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: A book that has both aged terribly and was fair for its day. Excellent – I love books like that, the cognitive dissonance always wakes you up a bit. Yet the thing I found most shocking of all … not a hot air balloon in sight. And no, I’m not marking that as a spoiler, you should go in knowing that. Tv has lied to us.

The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde

Goodreads Blurb: Oscar Wilde’s only novel is the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty.

(Goodreads Page)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: I think my favourite thing about this book is that beyond Dorian’s wish/prayer we’re never given an exact explanation of how the picture came to be as it is. The point of the story is not to explain the world in which Dorian lives but to examine his soul.

Brother Cadfael’s Penance by Allis Peters

Goodreads Blurb: While Cadfael has bent Abbey rules, he has never broken his monastic vows–until now.

(Goodreads page)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: I enjoyed how the mystery is almost an afterthought next to the politics of the realm, and Cadfael’s own personal worries. And it’s mostly resolved with … well he was a d*** so he deserved it.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Goodreads Blurb: Acclaimed by one reviewer to be the greatest novel ever written, the story of Mrs. Bennett’s search for husbands for her daughters is told with wit and charm.

(Goodreads page)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Goodreads Review: Mr. Bennet is quite as ill mannered as his wife, and I don’t know why adaptions try to pretend otherwise. By the end of the book I really wanted to punch him in the face.
